Tiger Airways Expands in Asia

Singapore-based discount airline, Tiger Airways, has commenced additional flights to destinations in Thailand -- capitalizing on the Thai Open Skies policy.  The Tiger Airways destinations of Bangkok, Hatyai and Krabi, Thailand, are in response to increased demand.  These additional flights to Thailand are expected to fly more than 100,000 passengers between Singapore and Thailand.

This development follows the recent increase of Tiger Airways flights between Singapore and Phuket, Thailand, earlier this month.

Tiger Airways CEO, Tony Davis, said "The Thai aviation policy of Open Skies has made this possible, and it has resulted in a big boost to business and tourism.  The growing demand has encouraged us to add even more flights from August to these hot destinations."

Jetstar, another low-cost airline, is expected to introduce a thrice-weekly Sydney-Phuket service starting this November.

North American Airlines Expands

U.S. carrier North American Airlines has just expanded its routes; it has just commenced direct flight service between Lagos, Nigeria, and New York.

The airline will operate a thrice-weekly round trip, using Boeing 767-300ER wide-bodied aircraft.  The Boeing 767-300ER has 30 seats in business class and 176 coach seats.

This is the first non-stop service ever between the U.S. and Lagos.  Nigeria signed an open skies agreement with the U.S. in 1999.

U.S. Airlines Show Strong Financial Gains

The largest U.S. air carriers started reporting second quarter financial results this week, and the news is looking good.

"June quarter results for the U.S. airline industry are expected to be strong, and we think September's results could be even better," said Merrill Lynch analysis Michael Linenberg, in Aviation Week.  Merrill Lynch projects the net profit to double to about $1.2 billion, with operating margins of 7.5%.

Linenberg estimated the industry will see a 12% increase in revenues, to approximately USD $29 billion.  This is mainly due to a 12% increase in unit revenue and no decrease in capacity.  This USD$3.2 billion increase in revenue will more than offset the USD $1.3 billion increase in fuel expense.

Why should you care?  If you are interested in a career as a commercial airline pilot, this should reinforce the fact that the industry is getter stronger and stronger -- and a great place to consider as an exciting career.  Want to know more?  CAll Phoenix East Aviation at 1-800-868-4359 and speak to an Admissions Officer.

Asian Pacific & Middle East Facing Shortages of Pilots

Airlines in the Asian Pacific and Middle East regions are facing serious shortages of skilled personnel, due to the surge in aircraft orders, which in turn was stimulated by strong industry growth, according to the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA).

Airline operators in those two regions are expected to require an additional 150,000 employees.

Carriers most affected are airlines in China, India and the Middle East.  PILOTS and maintenance engineers are the MOST SOUGHT AFTER.  It is anticipated that this shortage will also PUSH UP WAGES OF PILOTS.

The UN International Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) has forecast the Asian Pacific region to experience stable annual passenger growth 'above the world average.'  The Middle East is projected to show the highest average annual growth rate of about 10 percent this year, 10.5 percent in 2007 and at least 9.5 percent for 2008.

United Airlines Reports Highest-ever June Passenger Load

Total scheduled revenue passenger miles (RPMs) increased in June by 2.3 percent compared to the same period last year.  United operates more than 3,700 flights a day on United, United Express and Ted to more than 210 U.S. cities.
