Airline Pilot Responsibilities

The job of an airline pilot consists of the following responsibilities:

1. Navigate or pilot aircraft to transport mail, freight and/or passengers

2. Supervise or perfrom pre-flight checks of loading, fuel supplies, instruments, and switches

3. Discuss with meteorologist weather conditions for take-off and flight

4. Supervise activities of flight deck crew

5. Modify flight plan as necessary

In the United Kingdom in 2000, there were 16,449 airline and commercial pilots (with Airline Transport Pilot Licenses and Commercial Pilot Licenses). In the US the FAA estimates there are over 600,000 pilots, both airline and private pilots. Six percent of them are female.

PEA Graduates First Class of Dispatchers for Middle Eastern Airlines

Phoenix East Aviation (PEA) announces the graduation of the first group of new airline dispatchers for Middle East Airlines AirLiban (MEA). Phoenix East initiated training 23 student dispatchers for MEA and other Middle Eastern airlines in February. The  recent graduation ceremonies were attended by MEA management personnel, as well as by Ghassan Reslan, CEO of Phoenix East Aviation. The intense six-week training course took place in Beirut, Lebanon, at the MEA training facility; it was conducted in accordance with curriculum provided by PEA, developed to meet ICAO and Lebanese aviation authority requirements.

The next PEA airline dispatcher course to be held in Beirut is scheduled to begin in late September of this year.

Stereotypes about Airline Pilots

A stereotype about airline pilots persists -- that they are male, trained by the military,are trim and fit,have perfect vision, and are excellent at mathematics. Then there's the myth that all pilots are paid like senior superjumbo jet captains for major airlines. Maybe 50 years some of this had some small bit of accuracy to it, but not today. Women and minorities are in all positions in aviation now, including as captains for major airlines, charter operations and corporate fleets. Approximately one-half of the current pilots never flew in the military, and as long as your vision is correctable to 20/20, a pilot can wear glasses or contact lenses. You don't have to be perfectly trim in build, but you do have to be fit enough to pass your recurring flight medical exams. And regarding pay, it's important to be realistic, the majority of pilots don't make the same salaries as senior captains at major airlines who have 10 or 15 years experience. Some pilots for small airlines don't make much money, especially when they first start out. Most salaries are in between. However, it is truly wonderful to get paid for flying, if flying is your passion. You are respected as a professional pilot, and you wear the uniform of an important organization, your airline. You have responsibility for the lives of many people, and they rely on you. Not only do you travel all the time to various cities and countries in your job, but you have the opportunity for you AND your family to fly free whenever you want.
